Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (WFN) -- If you want to make tequila that knocks you on your ass, sometimes you need help from a burro.

That's the philosophy of the makers of Tequila 7 Leguas, which is the only distillery in Mexico that makes the country's favorite liquor the old-fashioned way -- with burros.

Tequila is distilled from the juice of the agave plant and the 52-year-old company squeezes out the juice by having burros pull a wheel-shaped millstone called a "taona" in a circle over the plants.

Although other tequila makers use machines to squeeze the juice, a 7 Leguas spokeswoman says the ass-pulling gives its company's liquor a better flavor.

There is a price for quality. The burros take 38 hours on average to do what machines can do in only eight hours.

Tequila 7 Leguas is currently demonstrating its method of tequila-making at the 10th Annual Festival Gourmet International in Puerto Vallarta, which lasts through Saturday (Nov. 21).
