Chicago, IL -- It may not make much "scents" but a candle company claims one of its new wax fragrances can make a small room seem bigger.

The Apple Orchard candle made by Colonial at Home is supposed to stimulate the part of the brain that perceives room size and is recommended for use in cramped office cubicles and tiny apartments.

Smell and taste researcher Dr. Alan Hirsch says the green apple scent of the candle has been proven to make people feel like they have more space when they're stuck in tight quarters.

He says when he tested it on folks who were placed in coffin-sized rooms, they felt less claustrophobic.

On the flip side, those same people felt more confined when they were placed in the small space and exposed to the smell of barbecued meat.

Hirsch says people can use scents to bring about desired behaviors anywhere -- including appetite-suppressing vanilla mint in the kitchen, mixed florals to stimulate learning in the office and cucumber melon to arouse a woman's sexual feelings in the bedroom.
