Farmington Hills, MI -- Think there are too many sports cliches to count? Well, you didn't count on Michigan psychologist Dr. Don Powell. He's spent the last year cataloguing more than 4000 sporty catchphrases and picked the 1700 best for a new book, "Best Sports Cliches Ever!" (Sports Cliches Press). The cliches are divided into 87 categories including, football, basketball, coaching, and big games. The book also traces the origins of many cliches that originated in other realms of life and then transferred into the sports world. For example, "This game will be won in the trenches," and, "He has a rifle for an arm," have military origins while, "He brought his 'A' game," comes from report card terminology. Powell says he's always enjoyed sports cliches and was fascinated about how many there are and how often they're used. In fact, he claims sports cliches pop up in 50 percent of all conversations. Many people have a love/hate relationship with cliches, but Powell says they're popular because "they always seem to fit the situation."
