|
San Diego, CA (WFN) -- Two doctors in San Diego have long shared a friendship. Now they also share a kidney. A few months ago, Dr. Richard Fassett, an ear, nose and throat specialist, came very close to needing dialysis due to a deteriorating kidney. Although his wife tried to donate one of her own, it was deemed unsuitable and Fassett mentioned the problem in passing to his longtime colleague, Dr. Charles Tesar, by admitting he was "running on empty." However, Tesar surprised his old friend by offering to donate a kidney -- if he was a suitable donor. Luckily, it was a close enough match and, within weeks, Tesar's extra kidney was transplanted into Fassett. Now both doctors are back to full speed and Fassett says he's able to toast his friend's wonderful gift with champagne, not apple juice, "because I'm almost 100 percent." The two doctors hope their example inspires other organ donations because, as Fassett puts it, "there's a big need for non-related living donors."
