Orlando, FL (WFN) -- A tomato fight is brewing in Florida because a grower thinks the Florida Tomato Committee is giving the company a rotten deal because the tomatoes aren't round enough. Robert Meade, a spokesman for the Santa Sweets tomato grower, claims the committee is squashing their so-called UglyRipe hybrid tomatoes by not giving them an exemption to be shipped out of the state because they are lumpy and bumpy and don't quite meet requirements. Santa Sweets sits on the committee, which for three years has given the company an exemption, but Meade claims the other members won't exempt their tomatoes again because the other growers are jealous of their better-tasting tomatoes. Reggie Brown, manager of the committee isn't swallowing it. He says the committee isn't preventing Santa Sweets from shipping its tomatoes and that they operate under USDA supervision. He says, "We're not an arbitrary, whimsical organization." Meade says his company is now trying to lobby in Washington to have their tomatoes classified in a non-round category.
