Omaha, NE (WFN) -- Professional quilt restorer Nancy Kirk is blanketing the U.S. to inspire folks to become restorers too. Kirk is on a crusade to save damaged, worn and beloved quilts by teaching her craft to others. She estimates five million quilts in the U.S. are in need of restoration, but sadly, there are less than three dozen professional restorers across the country. That's why she's held restoration workshops for 12 years now in Omaha, Nebraska, and one elsewhere in the U.S. each year. In every class she needles at least two students into turning pro, and if they do, they are booked with work a year in advance and can earn upwards of $45 an hour. She even dares up-and-coming quilt restorers to wear a name tag out in public and see how much business they'll get. "We're not like the Maytag man. We don't sit around. We're swamped with calls," she says. Kirk's next workshop will be Oct. 6 in Omaha, but she has also sells a DVD, "Quilt Restoration Workshop," on her website nancykirk.com.
