Dallas, TX (WFN) -- In most companies, employees covet the corner office, but at American Airlines, staffers want "The Pickle." "The Pickle" is an oversized inflatable dill trophy that is awarded monthly to the best workers in the system, and refers to a customer service training video which advises employees to go the extra mile for customers, or "give 'em the pickle." The lighthearted video was made by a restauranteur who realized he could increase customer satisfaction by giving an extra pickle free of charge. Past winners of the pickle include two workers who picked through four bags of trash to find a crucial document for a passenger, and baggage handlers who found a bride's wedding dress just in time for her nuptials. American Airlines Customer Service head Ralph Richardi is the man responsible for putting the pickle program in place at the airline to lighten the mood after a few years of bumpy business. It's a legacy he may carry until he retires: Not only is Richardi recognized throughout the company as "that pickle guy" for his appearance in the video but an outtake reel of him chomping on dills is currently a company favorite.
