New York, NY (WFN) -- Film strips haven't been used in schools since the end of the disco era but a New York author is shining a new light on the forgotten art form.

Danny Gregory is the author of "Change Your Underwear Twice A Week: Lessons From The Golden Age of Classroom Filmstrips" (Artisan) and has spent years stripping audio visual labs of their old film strips and compiling them in the book.

Gregory says film strips were used in classrooms mainly between 1945 and 1975 to educate and socialize youngsters about what foods to eat, how to dress and to always trust policemen.

But the advent of the VCR in the early 1980s marked the end of the film strip era.

These days, Gregory says the strips are mainly used by church groups, home schoolers and avant-garde artists who find the images on the strips both comforting and ironic.

Gregory doesn't know if his stripped-down history will inspire new interest in film strips but says "the projectors pop up on eBay every day and the cost of shipping is usually higher than the cost of the machines."
