Boulder, CO (WFN) -- A company's plan to market booze-soaked sunflower seeds to kids as well as adults is making some anti-alcohol advocates spit in disgust. The Thanasi Foods company will soon be marketing Jim Beam Original Kentucky Bourbon Soaked Sunflower Seeds, which are soaked in bourbon before they are roasted. Although the seeds have virtually no alcoholic content, they do have a taste similar to the bourbon and that's got advocacy groups like The Center for Science in the Public Interest and Mothers Against Drunk Driving madder than drunken sailors. CSPI spokesman George Hacker says "dressing up" the seeds in "sheep's clothing is not helping the efforts to reduce underage drinking at all" while MADD spokeswoman Lynne Goughler says Thanasi Foods is being irresponsible and shouldn't "...expose kids to more alcohol than they're already exposed to." Still, Thanasi Foods spokesman Phillip Gates insists his product isn't meant to encourage underage drinking saying, "You can smell it more than you can taste it." The bourbon-soaked seeds hit the market next month.
