New York, NY -- Many films about marijuana have been dopey but one New York filmmaker believes he has just made what he calls "...the thinking person's pot comedy." Cliff Roth has just finished The Stoned Channel, a comedy about a home shopping network for pot smokers, and says he spent nearly 15 years on the project to keep it from being as half-baked as previous stoner films like Cheech And Chong's "Up In Smoke." As he puts it, "I wanted to appeal to intelligent, thoughtful, college-educated pot smokers." Consequently, Roth spent as much time on writing songs like "Those Were The Bongs" and "Marijuana French Toast" as he did on the film but says he succeeded because "My in-laws like it -- and they've never touched the stuff." He also insisted actors to refrain from the wacky weed while on camera but not every actor followed the edict. Roth says one actor snuck a real joint on camera and says, as a result, "I never had to do more retakes than on that day." The Stoned Channel will have its world premiere in October at the Berkeley Film Festival in San Francisco.
