Los Angeles, CA (WFN) -- Lawrence Welk has been dead since 1992, but his career is getting new life, thanks to his "wunnerful, wunnerful" grandson. Kevin Welk is the head honcho of Vanguard Records and has hired some top club disc jockeys to remix a bunch of his grandad's best-known songs for a new CD, "Upstairs At Larry's." It's not as wacky as it sounds. Kevin says his grandfather always did dance music and tried to stay current with the charts. Still, the younger Welk tried to steer the remixers away from the kitsch factor by using the edict: "Do it right. It's not a joke." Kevin knew the final version would sound good but admits he was surprised by the disc jockey song choices. Not one DJ picked Welk's 1961 No. 1, "Calcutta," but he received at least five remixes of "Baby Elephant Walk," two of which made the record. Although Lawrence Welk isn't around to see the new CD, Kevin is confident that he would appreciate it. In his words, "He'd laugh and say, 'I don't get this.' But he would be all for it."
