Clearwater, FL (WFN) -- Today's kids have a great excuse to skip their homework -- it could be making them fat. According to Florida-based health educator Taylor Grant, both the childhood obesity rate and the amount of homework assigned to schoolkids have tripled since 1980. Although there have been no scientific studies linking the two, Grant points out that kids who have two hours of homework every night have much less time for physical activity than those with just 20 minutes' worth. She claims the increase in homework over the years has also brought more stress into kids lives, which can make them turn to food to combat the anxiety. Grant says the irony of it all is that overweight kids often do worse in school and she thinks parents need to put their foot down and do something about the problem. In her words, "For the good of kids, parents need to say, 'Put down that homework and get outside and play!' It sounds ridiculous, but we really need to stand up for our children's health."
