Los Angeles, CA (WFN) -- What if your job forced you to be mean to your friends?

That was the dilemma faced by up-and-coming actress Lauren C. Mayhew while filming her role as Hillary Duff's arch-enemy in the upcoming movie, "Raise Your Voice."

The flick is set at a performing arts school in Los Angeles and Mayhew is the big city prima donna who rules the school before the small town singer played by Duff comes into town.

The two actresses hit it off in real life, so Mayhew had to, in her words, "disassociate myself from my fellow actors and just allow myself to be a total bitch to them" in order to play her part.

"It wasn't that hard to do," she says, but adds that she and Duff would break character as soon as the cameras stopped rolling and laugh hysterically at the character's bad behavior.

"Raise Your Voice" hits theaters October 8.
