|
Lahaina, HI (WFN) -- There might be better artists than Bryan DeBris, but none can hold a candle to the Lahaina-based painter. That's because DeBris is the world's only artist who uses candles instead of brushes for his artworks. DeBris started his burning ambition 35 years ago after learning about a technique used by Leonardo DaVinci called "sfumato" that uses a candle flame like a paint brush. Many of DeBris' pyro paintings feature silhouettes of Hawaiian leaders and landscapes, but he has also attempted to burn his place into art history with a rendition of the "Mona Lisa." DeBris' works have sold for as much as $6000 but his flame fame could rise even higher next month, when a gallery in Maui holds a major exhibition of his work. After that, DeBris is setting his burning ambition on an even hotter goal -- a candle painting of DaVinci's "The Last Supper."
