Around The Weird: Bizarre News Briefs

East Lansing, MI -- A burglar became bungled when he lowered himself from a skylight into an East Lansing, Michigan, art gallery and realized he wasn't able to climb back up the rope. The wannabe thief then called police to help him escape from the jam, using the gallery's phone. Art shop owner Roy Saper tells the Michigan State University newspaper, "The State News," "There are professional thieves, but this guy was not only not a professional, he wasn't even an apprentice -- he was a total loser."

BALTIMORE -- For years, carrots have been the vegetable credited with helping eyesight. Now, broccoli is pushing carrots out of the spotlight. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have shown George Bush's least favorite vegetable protects the eye from damage caused by UV light that can lead to macular degeneration.

MINNEAPOLIS -- An air traveler recently played a game of "you show me your wand and I'll show you mine" with security screeners at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. While security guards waived a metal detection wand over passenger Daryl Miller's shorts, he pulled them down to his ankles and exposed his nakedness. According to police, he then said, "There, how do you like your job?" Miller was arrested for indecent exposure and released on $300 bail.

BERLIN -- Dumb blond jokes may be one of the contributing factors to making blonds dumb. Scientists in Germany performed psychometric tests on women of various hair color, but before they took the test they were asked to read a dumb blond joke. After reading the joke, blond women performed the tests more slowly than they did without reading the joke. Researchers believe the study indicates exposure to unfounded prejudices makes people work slower, but more cautiously, to avoid making mistakes.
