East Lansing, MI (WFN) -- The grass is always greener on the other side -- and, at the Olympics, it's going to be portable too. Organizers have decided to use what's known in soil science circles as a "portable field" for the Games next month in Athens. Michigan State turf expert Trey Rogers is supervising the project, which involves positioning 6000 1100-pound, coffee-table-sized boxes of Bermuda grass in the main stadium in Athens. The walls of each box are removed once they are placed in the stadium so the grass will be smooth for events such as soccer and track and field. The local crew in Greece has already done a test run, but they'd better be prepared for opening day: According to Rogers, they'll only have 65 hours to set up the portable field after the opening ceremonies end.
