West Lafayette, IN (WFN) -- For Midwest farmers, this is the time of year when it's best not to go against the grain. According to Bill Field, an agricultural safety expert at Purdue University in Indiana, the period from late May to July is the high season for lethal grain bin accidents. Every year, an average of 14 American farmers suffocate after becoming stuck in large bins of grain, but late spring and summer is a particularly bad period for farmers in the Midwest because their corn and wheat has been stored for so long. This increases the chances of moldy clumps of wheat or corn forming in the storage bins -- which many farmers try to dislodge by hopping into the container, risking the chance of being sucked under the grain. Field says it's possible to survive being buried alive in corn, because you can breathe -- the problem is, most people panic, scream and choke to death. He suggests farmers take safety precautions when loading grain, including working with a partner and prodding grain clumps with a pole while standing outside the storage bin.
