Los Angeles, CA (WFN) -- Andy Dick stars in a new reality TV show where he puts young go-getters who want to become his personal assistant through the ringer, but in reality, he's an old softy.

On the show, "The Assistant," Dick's crazy behavior keeps the 12 contestants on edge, eliciting responses ranging from nervous-laughter to crying.

Even though it's a reality show, in reality, Dick says he's not as crazy and cruel as he is on the show.

In fact, the elimination rounds became hard for him because he was "getting attached" to the competitors. And he claims he didn't want to make them eat anything disgusting like on "Fear Factor."

Dick says, "Even my psychologist says, 'You're not as crazy as you're cast, but I won't tell anyone.'"

Still, Dick figures he pulled off being crazy pretty well, and says he plans to put that nervous energy to good use on the set of his sitcom, "Less Than Perfect."

"The Assistant" premieres July 12 on MTV.
