South Burlington, VT (WFN) -- Job seekers' resumes are full of fluff and mumbo jumbo, according to the co-founder of a resume consulting firm in Vermont. Mike Worthington of ResumeDoctor.com says his recent survey of 160,000 resumes turned up this statistic: More than half of all resumes include "vague phrases" like "team player," "driven" and "detail oriented." He says these phrases reveal nothing about a job candidate and should be excised from resumes entirely. So if you can't brag about your great "communications skills" -- which is the top vague phrase, appearing on 12.5 percent of resumes -- what should you put on your resume? Worthington advises going with language that gives specific details, such as "grew sales department by 68 percent" or "produced payroll for 2000 employees." He says most recruiters only spend 5-10 seconds on a resume, so you'd better grab their attention quick.
