New York, NY -- Dentists are the latest experts Americans are turning to in the battle of the bulge.

A select group of dental experts have begun offering patients a new mouth appliance called the DDS which prevents people from eating large mouthfuls of food.

The dental plate fits on the roof of the mouth and restricts the amount of space for food, which has the dual effect of reducing the amount you eat and making you chew more slowly.

The $400, custom-fitted device is only worn during meals.

New York-based cosmetic dentist Dr. Clifford Williams is one of the first to offer the DDS to patients and he believes this will be a helpful behavioral tool to slow eaters down and make them think before they shovel food down their throats.

He says studies show patients who use the appliance eat 25 percent less food and lose an average of 1.3 pounds more per week.
