Orlando, FL (WFN) -- A former boxer is taking off the gloves and exposing the gay sub-culture within the sport.

Bisexual former boxer Alex Hutchinson has released a novel titled "Virgin Gloves" (iUniverse) which focuses on a bisexual prize-fighter who falls in love with another boxer.

Although the story is fiction, Hutchinson says he drew on the themes in his own life for the main character.

He says he wanted to write the book because, "someone's got to tell that story." He was shocked when he started researching the subject and realized no one had written about it yet.

As Hutchinston puts it, "What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room."

But it is out there, he says, and in fact, sources in the boxing world tell him that 20 percent of boxers are gay.

Hutchinson doesn't expect any reprisal from fellow boxers for outing the sport, but he says being an out boxer is still taboo although it "might have toned down" over the years.

The next project Hutchinson will be taking on is a novel about the sport of Backyard Wrestling, which he has also participated in.
