ProCyte is the first company to synthesize the copper peptide GHK, which is a human amino acid sequence that delivers copper into the cells.

The company's skincare line, Neova, has been available to the medical industry to treat patients with surgical scarring for years, but the newest wrinkle in the company's marketing plan is to promote its anti-aging benefits at spas and salons.

Company spokeswoman Robin Carmichael says copper is important to tissue repair. In ancient Egyptian times, it was thought to purify water and copper bracelets were thought to cure arthritis.

But like ancient times, without the peptide, mixing copper into face creams won't do anything because the metal would sit on the surface of the skin.
