| 2004-06-18 - Weird News Wireless Flash News Root Beer Declared 'Safest Soft Drink' For Teeth | ||
|
Chicago, IL (WFN) -- Parents may tell kids they'll rot their teeth out by drinking too much cola, but other sweet drinks like iced tea are actually worse for their choppers. According to a new study, non-cola soft drinks and canned iced tea are much more harsh on the enamel. To achieve their findings, researchers exposed healthy dental enamel to a variety of popular soft drinks for 14 days. Dentists point to the flavor additives in non-colas and sweet iced tea -- which include organic acids such as malic or tartaric acid -- as the biggest culprits for eroding teeth. If you're going to drink anything from a can, it might as well be root beer, which the tooth experts declare the "safest soft drink" because of its lower amounts of flavor additives. The study results appear in the latest edition of "General Dentistry," the newsletter of the Academy of General Dentistry.
