New York, NY (WFN) -- Don McLean may have sang, "Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie" but he's saying hello to the Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

McLean is being inducted into the prestigious Hall tonight (Jun. 10), and he finds the honor interesting because he considers himself "a singer and guitar player" more than a songwriter.

Still, he admits, "I've had more success than other songwriters even though I don't try to write hits" and says the success of songs like "American Pie," "Starry, Starry Night" and "And I Love Her So," has raised the bar "extremely high" for future songs.

But it's not just living up to those songs, McLean also wants to live up to ideals he has set for his children.

As he puts it, "I became a father 15 years ago and, as a result, I don't write songs that are bull***t. They have to be profound or interesting and have something to say."
