Covina, CA (WFN) -- Ronald Reagan's presidency was bad for communism and great for jelly beans.

That's the sweet news from candy man David Klein, who invented Jelly Belly jelly beans -- the late president's favorite jelly bean -- back in 1976.

Reagan became sweet on jelly beans when he used them to quit smoking but Klein sold the product before Reagan took office in 1980.

Still, the Great Communicator's great love for the gourmet jelly beans made them a national phenomenon. In Klein's words, "When the president likes something, everyone wants a piece."

Although Klein didn't benefit financially from Reagan's endorsement, he says the late president was one of America's greatest because he "...made jelly beans an adult product sold all-year-round; not just Easter."
