|
Brevard, NC (WFN) -- The folks in Brevard, North Carolina, are going nuts for white squirrels next Sunday (May 30) -- literally. The town is home to hundreds of white squirrels but now is planning to celebrate them with the 1st Annual White Squirrel Festival, a nutty event similar to the Groundhog Day celebration held each February in Punxsatawney, Pennsylvania. A white squirrel named "Pisgah Polly" will be given some acorns and if she eats them, that means it will be a long, hot summer. However, if the squirrel tries to hoard the nuts, then locals should expect an early fall. Besides the nutty ceremony, locals will compete to write an anthem that will be sung at all future Squirrel Festivals. The first white squirrel arrived in Brevard in the 1950s and local legend claims it escaped from a Florida circus. Since then, the squirrel transplants have become very popular, making up 25 percent of the local squirrel population.
