St. Louis, MO (WFN) -- Ice cream lovers have a reason to scream tomorrow (May 22): The 100th anniversary of the ice cream cone will be honored in St. Louis. Some cone chronologists believe it was pastry salesman Ernest A. Hamwi who came up with the cone at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. As the story goes, ice cream vendor Charles Menches ran out of dishes, so he took Hamwi up on an offer to make dishes by forming cones out of his thin flat pastries. The ice cream cone was invented that day at the World's Fair and became a hit. Although there are numerous other claims when and by whom the cone was invented, ice cream retailer Dairy Queen is sweet on this version and will be celebrating the anniversary by holding an ice cream cone eating contest for high school students. The prize: a free ice cream cone every week for an entire year.
