Joshua Tree, CA (WFN) -- A modern-day shaman will be holding a big pow-wow in Joshua Tree, California later this month. Author Lynn Andrews is a member of the Sisterhood of the Shields, an ancient group of women which passes along their secrets and knowledge from mother to daughter. On May 27, Andrews will hold her 16th Annual Joshua Tree Gathering near Palm Desert, California, where she leads guests on a spiritual exploration using tried and true shaman methods. For example, she says people suffering from grief may make a doll to represent themselves so they can see a physical representation of their pain, or they may make a drum to represent the bad feelings and then drum them away. This year's theme is "Sacred Luminaria" and Andrews will teach folks how to burn away the negativity from within, but she also figures folks need a helping shamanistic hand dealing with the ways "we are violently talking about peace." In her opinion, we have become a "planet of war."
