Santa Barbara, CA (WFN) -- A Jewish rocker is fiddling with his roots by singing in Yiddish.

Jay Janning is the lead singer of the two-man, five-piece band Alter Rocker & The Corned Beef Rangers, which is a pun on the Yiddish phrase "alta cocker" -- meaning dirty old man.

The unknown songwriter started scribbling Yiddish ditties as a way to show what he could do that other musicians couldn't.

He knew he was a good writer and could be funny, but it wasn't until he wrote and performed a song about members of his synagogue that he realized he stumbled onto the right sound.

Janning says he does musically "what you saw in "Seinfeld, The Nanny" and "Dharma & Greg" with songs like "Don't Oogle my Kugel," the delicatessen favorite "Time for a Nosh" and the ever-popular, "Don't Eat Pork" with lyrics like:"

Pork makes you stupid pork makes you dumb/ You get dimwitted and you're just no fun/ Pork makes you lazy pork makes you weak/ Pork makes you ugly & it just ain't chic."

Janning's next performance will be this Sunday (May 2) in at The Santa Barbara Jewish Festival in California.
