Los Altos, CA -- Priests and nuns are heading out to clubs and bars, but it's not to get an illicit drink or two: The holy men and women are trying to rally twentysomethings to get in touch with their spiritual side using a program called "Theology on Tap." It's a U.S.-wide trend where church parishes organize a weekly meeting a local tavern and encourage young folks to join in discussions of the meaning of life while kicking back a few brewskis. Los Altos, California-based author Josie Melo was a speaker at a recent Theology on Tap meeting and she thinks it's a great program because it lets folks "meet God at a bar." She says many people in their 20s and 30s have gotten out of the habit of going to church, so this is a good way for churches to reach out to them. Although most of the participants in Melo's group come out to the bar specifically for the God talk, she says she's noticed other bar patrons are eavesdropping more and more with each meeting she goes to.
