History Repeats For Tommy Smothers

Los Angeles, CA (WFN) -- Many comedians would like their jokes to be funny after 36 years but not Tommy Smothers of the Smothers Brothers.

The duo had their popular 1960s-era variety show yanked from under them because of its scathing political satire against the Vietnam War.

Smothers looked at tapes of the old show recently and said what seemed like dated humor a few years back now seemed surprisingly relevant.

In his words, "All you had to do was substitute Donald Rumsfeld's name for Robert McNamara's and Saddam Hussein for Ho Chi Minh."

Despite seeing many parallels between the current Iraq conflict and the Vietnam war, Smothers sees a big difference: "People are more self-censoring about what they say these days."

Smothers plans to put the old variety series on DVD, but not tonight. He's busy performing in Los Angeles at a gala honoring actor Karl Malden.
