|
Washington (WFN) -- It may burst the bubble of health nuts concerned that American youngsters are getting fatter drinking soda from school vending machines, but only 20 percent of kids are buying pop at high schools. The data comes from the National Family Opinion WorldGroup's Share of Intake Panel, which found the average intake of regular carbonated soft drinks, among students who consumed soft drinks, was roughly one 12-ounce can a week. That means the campaign to take soda machines out of schools in hopes of helping kids shed the pounds will probably fizzle out. Michael E. Ginevan, a statistician hired by the National Soft Drink Association says, "Eliminating all vending machines appears to be an overly broad policy response that will have a very limited impact, if any, on childhood overweight." The NSDA says this is consistent with other data that says students aren't consuming sweetened drinks, so removing vending machines won't impact adolescent obesity.
