Washington (WFN) -- June brides who want a traditional wedding may want to pay a visit to an exhibition at the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum in Washington, D.C.. The exhibit, which opens today (Apr. 16), traces the evolution of American weddings from the 18th century to modern times. Curator Alden O'Brien says before throwing the bouquet became a tradition, wedding guests threw their stockings at the bride and groom. Whoever hit the bride or groom would be the next to marry. Wearing white never had anything to do with virginity says O'Brien. Instead, women wore their best dress at the ceremony, and during the 1800s best dresses were made of white cotton. It just happens that white became traditional. Also, white tuxedos were appropriate for a nighttime wedding, and wearing a tux during a daytime ceremony was gauche. Men wore whatever attire was suitable during daylight. Finally, O'Brien says every culture has a tradition of eating something sweet, like a wedding cake, but the trashy tradition of smashing cake into each other's faces started within the last 20 years. O'Brien calls it "American bologna."
