Brooklyn, NY (WFN) -- Subway commuters around New York City are getting a little literature with their morning coffee thanks to a new program that hands out short stories at subway stations. The so-called Subway Lit project started a few months ago and sends runners armed with thousands of one-page literary stories out to various subway stations during rush hour. Founder Jason Moriber says he's always wanted to distribute struggling writers' work on subway trains as a counterpoint to the sensational newspapers which are standard commuter reading material. He figures blaring headlines about murders and crimes are a real bummer when compared to an interesting story that you can finish by the time the commuter train rolls into your station. So far, the more artsy neighborhoods of Brooklyn have been most receptive to the literary project, which Moriber believes could have other benefits besides making commuters more well-read. He thinks the feel-good stories might actually have a calming effect on the cranky commuter crowds and become "a little oasis that will hopefully make people feel better."
