Minneapolis, MN (WFN) -- The cult cable classic "Mystery Science Theater 3000" had its share of drug references -- but marijuana is a mystery to Mike Nelson, the show's former host. Nelson recently recorded an audio commentary track for a newly restored DVD of "Reefer Madness," a 1938 "anti-pot" film that is a cult fave with snickering potheads. At first, Nelson balked at the offer. He's never tried marijuana, and feared his participation might make him sound "pro-pot." Luckily for Nelson, he says the original film is "so goofy and so bad" that it was easy to do the commentary without sounding dopey. Nelson admits "Reefer Madness" "obviously hasn't worked very well" at preventing youths from smoking pot, but believes its producers had good intentions. They just made one fatal error. In his words, "You can't tell insane lies." "Reefer Madness" will be released on April 20 and Nelson has also recorded commentary tracks for "Night Of The Living Dead" and "Carnival Of Souls."
