Dogs Jump On Low-Carb Craze

Vernon, CA (WFN) -- Here's a sign the low-carb craze is just going crazy: A pet food company is coming out with a low-carb kibble for rovers.

Pedigree is introducing a weight loss diet food for dogs that mostly contains protein and is supposed to help portly pooches drop up to 10 percent of their body weight in 12 weeks.

Canine nutritionist Tiffany Bierer says the idea for the formulation came from the success humans have achieved on low-carb diets.

Her research showed dogs could do just as well as their owners if they cut down carbs, and the high-protein diet works the same in pooches as humans, burning body fat but retaining lean muscle tissue.

Dr. Bierer says table scraps and overeating are to blame for the current epidemic of canine obesity.
