Placerville, CA (WFN) -- The towns of Monterey and Carmel in California are the top dogs in a list of dog-friendly cities in North America.

The study was done by dogfriendly.com, which ranked 10 doggie destinations based on number and quality of dog-friendly accommodations, availability of interesting things to do with your dog and restaurants and public transportation that allow canines.

Monterey had tails wagging over the dog-friendly dining, beaches and boat tours that welcome dogs.

Cape Cod-Nantucket, Massachusetts, came in second place because small and large dogs can fly in the cabin of the local airplanes as well as on ferries and shuttle buses.

Finally, Chicago came in at number three and is the largest city in the list with upscale hotels and numerous restaurants that cater to canines, as well as the White Sox annual "Dog Day."
