Of Mouse And Man

Los Angeles, CA (WFN) -- Hewlett-Packard has filled a lawsuit against competitor Gateway, over six patent licenses, including circuitry of the cursor display, but few people remember what Douglas C. Engelbart did for user display.

Engelbart was the first person to wire a monitor to a computer, giving the user a way to communicate with the computer according to Martin J. Smith and Patrick J. Kiger, authors of the new book of all things pop culture called "Poplorica" (Harper Collins).

According to Smith and Kiger, Engelbart also created the first mouse, which only moved the cursor around the screen, out of a hollowed-out block of wood with two small wheels wired into the computer.

In the fall of 1968, Engelbart demonstrated his device, which has been called "the mother of all demos."

At the same demonstration, he also used what he called "memex" which, these days, is called "hypertext," and found in the form of links on a webpage.
