Gretna, LA (WFN) -- The classic children's tale, "Alice in Wonderland," is getting a Cajun spin in a new picture book. The story, "Down the Crawfish Hole" (Pelican Publishing), replaces the characters in Lewis Carroll's book with Cajun critters and plops the whole adventure in the middle of a bayou. Instead of hopping after a white rabbit, the main character, Maurice, follows after a little blue crayfish who drops his watch and jumps down a large hole. And while Alice eats a small cake and drinks out of a bottle to grow larger and smaller, hero Maurice changes his size by eating a bowl of Cajun gumbo and some pralines. Carroll's eerie Cheshire cat is replaced with a bayou opossum with glowing yellow eyes, while the evil Queen of Hearts becomes a Toad Queen. Author and illustrator Wes Thomas is a Louisiana native who came up with the idea of "Cajun-izing" the trippy tale because it "fit perfectly with [Louisiana's] unique and unusual culture."
