Evansville, IN (WFN) -- An Indiana-based satirical website which fabricates news stories just for laughs is becoming pretty good at being taken seriously. In December, HoosierGazette.com made headlines when one of its satires fooled reporters at the "San Diego Union Tribune," which ran the item on a 5 ft., 6 in., "geek" signing a contract to play basketball at Purdue University because he shared the same name as a top draft pick. Now, the website is hoaxing folks with a story about a college student who showed up to a screening of "The Passion of the Christ" dressed as the devil, only to be pelted with gummy bears and containers of Coca-Cola by elderly churchgoers in the audience. Several internet newsgroups have posted the story as fact, with members reacting passionately. One lambastes the attackers, saying, "Nice behavior for Christians! Gummi Bears, Ju-Ju Bees, popcorn and Coca-Cola are not terribly effective tools for dealing with the devil." Not everyone is being fooled. At the humor website Fark.com, one astute reader noted, "I hate to be a party-pooper, but this article is satire."
