|
Los Angeles, CA (WFN) -- Hip Hop may be topping the charts but many old school soul bands refuse to give up the funk. Case in point: Music executive Jay King. Back in 1988, he lead Club Nouveau to their 1988 No. 1 "Lean On Me." Now, he's on a one-man crusade to reinvent the career of his favorite funk bands. These days, King works for Thump records and has been signing up old school acts like Lakeside, the Emotions and Midnight Star, with plans of "reinventing their recording careers." He says major record labels target the young but there's a lot of over-40 funk fans who want new music by their favorite artists, not rap-recycled versions of the original hits. But while the old school oldsters may be the target, King is counting out the young 'uns. His label just signed bass pioneer Bootsy Collins and, in his words, "He may be over 30 but everything he does is contemporary."
