|
Montclair, NJ (WFN) -- Nobody likes being downsized, but some people are using it as an excuse for a party. The latest trend among the recently-canned is to hold "downsizing ceremonies," rituals where fired folks celebrate the end of one chapter and beginning of another. Charlotte Eulette -- who devised the practice -- says "downsizees" deal with "the separation, transition and incorporation that come when you lose a job and need another" by discussing their past experiences and future plans. Although the party is usually held in a nice restaurant and guests give gifts to the "downsizer," Eulette says the ceremony isn't about getting free loot. For instance, Eulette's next downsizing hoedown is for a canned computer programmer who wants to emphasize that he has climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro and, therefore, can handle a bump in the road.
