| 2004-02-20 - Weird News Wireless Flash News Cigarette Warnings Get A Cover-Up With 'Smokewear' Stickers | ||
|
Frankfurt, Germany (WFN) -- Government efforts to post health warnings on cigarettes are being thwarted by a new trend in Europe: "Smokewear." That's the name of a Frankfurt, Germany-based firm which sells satirical stickers meant to cover up the large anti-smoking messages that are standard on cigarette packs in Europe. Smokewear co-founder Sebastian Friedrich says sales of the stickers went far beyond his expectations, with 200,000 ordered on his website, smokewear.de, since September. Friedrich is not necessarily in favor of smoking, but he thinks smokers have a right not to be disturbed by "aggressive" warning signs on their ciggies. He also believes smokers will have an increased need to cover the warnings as they get larger and incorporate more graphic images -- for example, black cancerous lungs. Friedrich is now working on a plan to provide the stickers to consumers for free, with advertisers footing the bill. He also says he'll distribute Smokewear in the U.S. if the demand arises.
