Work Out Without Leaving The Couch

Alexandria, VA (WFN) -- Here's a sign of how lazy some Americans have become: A group of physical therapists has developed a workout specifically for couch potatoes.

The four moves in the American Physical Therapy Association exercise routine barely require you to get up from the sofa, and include a "soda stretch" side bend where you use soda cans as weights and a series of leg lifts done while lying on the couch.

APTA member Patrice Winter says you won't burn a lot of calories doing the couch potato workout, but it is intense enough to keep your joints lubricated and deliver some extra oxygen to the brain.

She says the moves are meant to be "little nudges" to get sedentary types to be more active and she's hopeful it will inspire folks to try more challenging exercises.

The Couch Potato Workout was created with Super Bowl viewers in mind, but Winter says it can also be used during other marathon TV-watching events, such as the Academy Awards.
