Morristown, NJ -- Tomorrow (Jan. 29) the Seeing Eye dog celebrates its 75th anniversary -- in human years, not dog years.

The term Seeing Eye dog takes its name from the America's oldest dog guide school, The Seeing Eye.

The first Seeing Eye dog was a German shepherd named Buddy and was trained by Philadelphian Dorothy Harrison Eustis. Buddy was given to Morris Frank from Nashville, Tennessee, who went blind at an early age.

Morris and Eustis went on to found the New Jersey-based Seeing Eye school which places 270 dogs each year, according to spokeswoman Rosemary Carroll.

She says not much has changed in the way the dogs are trained over the years, except now the dogs go through four months of training instead of three, to learn how to deal with modern-day developments like quieter cars, right on red laws and aggressive drivers.

For the record, Carroll says the Seeing Eye dog predates the white cane, which came out after World War II.
