| 2004-01-16 - Weird News Wireless Flash News Super Bowl Means 'Green Sunday' For Avocado Growers | ||
|
Fallbrook, CA (WFN) -- This year's Super Bowl is being played in Houston, Texas, but California could end up being the real winner. That's because Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 1) is traditionally the biggest day of the year for avocado consumption and 95 percent of the nation's crop is grown in the Golden State. Avocado executives figure 43.5 million pounds of the so-called "alligator pears" will be eaten during the big game -- enough to bury the entire football field at Reliant Stadium seven feet deep. Most of that will be in guacamole dip but some avocado farmers like Jerome Stehly are thinking bigger. He says 20 percent of the population eat 48 percent of the avocados and hopes to make more green by convincing consumers to dip into more unusual menu ideas such as using avocados in a cheesecake or frying them tempura-style.
