Bean Growers Break Their Silence

Boston, MA (WFN) -- Today (Jan. 6) marks National Bean Day in America and bean growers are clearing the air of the jokes made at the expense of beans by holding a whirlwind tour honoring the legume.

Organizer of the Beaning of America Tour Tom Gabriel says beans have been known as the Rodney Dangerfield of the food world, but it's time people learn the health benefits of beans.

Even though the group doesn't like being the butt of bean jokes, they're still playing on the old stereotypes by having the Children's Opera in Boston perform a rendition of "Beans, beans the magical fruit," and then boarding a train bearing the slogans "Toot if you like beans," and "Who cut the cholesterol?"

Gabriel says, "we could either run away from the jokes or use them."
