Hollywood, CA -- The more things change, the more they stay the same. That's what Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences program director Randy Haberkamp discovered while assembling an upcoming exhibition of 100-year-old films. All of the movies in the program were first shown way back in 1903, when movie theaters were almost unheard of. Despite the passage of time, Haberkamp says all of the tricks seen in films today can be seen in the 1903 movies. For instance, Thomas Edison put product placement ads for his phonograph in his film, "The Great Train Robbery." And the old Hollywood standby of using sex to sell is seen in a short film entitled "From Showgirl to Burlesque Queen," in which a woman behind a screen removes her Victorian gown and emerges wearing a scanty costume. The exhibition, "A Century Ago: The Films of 1903," takes place tomorrow night (Dec. 10) in Hollywood.
