Dec. 17 Declared 'End Violence Against Sex Workers Day'

San Francisco, CA -- Sex workers all over the world are hooking up a new holiday for December: "International Day To End Violence Against Sex Workers."

The first-ever such day is scheduled for Dec. 17 and organizers are asking sex workers and their customers from around the world to gather in public at 5 p.m. local time to honor prostitutes who have been killed while on the job.

Event spokeswoman Annie Sprinkle says the anti-violence holiday was inspired by the so-called Green River Killer Gary Leon Ridgway, who confessed that he killed more than 48 sex workers because he figured no one would care.

Participants at the events are invited to read poems about their favorite sex workers and hold candlelight vigils.

Although some of the folks who attend the pro-sex worker ceremonies may actually hook up, Sprinkle says the ultimate goal is to support the decriminalization of prostitution.
