Robots Get The Recognition They So Richly Deserve

Pittsburgh, PA -- Last night (Nov. 10), robots took some time off from enslaving humans to be inducted into the first ever Robot Hall of Fame.

The Hall was created by Carnegie Mellon University to honor "noteworthy robots, both real and fictional, along with their creators in recognition of the increasing benefits robots are bringing to society."

Some of the inductees include NASA's Mars Pathfinder Microrover Flight Experiment -- nicknamed "Sojourner" -- and "Unimate," the first industrial robot. Also on this years list are R2-D2 from "Star Wars" and the evil HAL-9000 from "2001: A Space Odyssey."

The four inductees were chosen from a list of 32 nominees, however Carnegie Mellon University is keeping the full list under wrap, leaving journalists wondering where robots like Data from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and Hymie the Robot from TV's "Get Smart" ranked.

A spokeswoman for the University says new robots will be chosen annually, with the next batch in October, 2004.

Fittingly, the Hall will exist online at robothalloffame.org
